Mr. Bhakta Bahadur Raskoti

Bhakta Bahadur Raskoti is a young enthusiastic plant scientist continuously carrying out research on plant biodiversity in Nepal. He is an expert of discovery and conservation of rare and endangered species. Although he is avid in wide variety of questions related to biodiversity and conservation biology, most of his researches focus on wild orchids. He has an outstanding research experience of over a decade in the field of natural orchids of Nepal. Mr. Raskoti has been showing his great interest in orchids since his school time. He is always fascinated by the flowers of orchids. Later according to his wish, he perused his Master Degree in plant science and got an opportunity to begin his career in the same field as a research assistant in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Nepal Country Office. He worked there in the field of biodiversity, ecosystem and sustainable management program. He also served as research team member in Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). |
Mr. Raskoti has reported 20 new records for the orchid flora of Nepal and four new species of orchid for the plant science.
He has published a very important book “The Orchids of Nepal” in 2009. This book is the outcomes of more than a decade long field research in the wild orchid of Nepal. In the book, he has enlightened overall information of wild orchids of Nepal including description, distribution, ecology and conservation status with above 900 color photographs of 302 species and varieties of rare and endangered wild orchids of Nepal. He is also an author of the book “A Field Guide to Selected Flowers of Nepal”whichis in the press. Likewise, manuscript of the book entitled “Diversity and Biogeography of Genus Nymphaea (Nymphaeceae) in Nepal” being written by himis in the process of completion.
In the community level particularly in the rural areas of Nepal he is conducting various awareness programs for the conservation of wild orchids, biodiversity, rare and endangered species.
In addition to these, he worked as Editor of Botanica Orientalis Volume 4 (Journal of Plant Science) published by Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. While teaching biology in Sarvodaya secondary school, Palpa, Nepal, he successfully accomplished his responsibility as a Chief Editor of the wall magazine published by the school. Mr. Raskoti has published several peer review research papers in the national and international scientific journals. He has presented about a dozen of papers in the national and international conferences and will present a paper entitled “Himalayan orchid conservation problems and prospects: lesson from Nepal” in the 20th World Orchid Conference on November, 2011, going to be held in Singapore. He has also given interviews in several media to highlight on wild orchids, rare, endangered species and biodiversity of Nepal.
Mr. Raskoti received a prestigious Abraham Conservation Award 2010 for the recognition of conservation of nature and natural resources and sustainable development in Nepal.
