Steve Lester got his first guitar at age 16 for Christmas when he had no interest at all in learning how to play one. After taking some jazz lessons from John Lilley of West Chester, Pa. three years later, however, he was hooked. Mr. Lilley went on to a successful career as a member of the popular Philadelphia-based group The Hooters. Mr. Lester, meanwhile, went on to play bluegrass for three years along Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He continued to study jazz from the famous (Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Danny Gatton) and the not-so-famous. In 1984 he took the first of two master classes from Christopher Parkening, America’s premier classical guitar virtuoso. In 1985 he earned a classical guitar performance degree at Salisbury University in Maryland and joined the U.S. Army bands, serving in Korea, Germany, Afghanistan, Virginia and New York City.
